Climate change is helping create the perfect storm for malaria

Climate change is making malaria, one of the world’s oldest and deadliest diseases, harder to predict and control – hitting the most vulnerable communities hardest and threatening years of progress.

Changing weather patterns, health emergencies and humanitarian crises are creating the perfect storm for malaria to thrive. The impact is being felt now, hitting the most vulnerable communities hardest, with children and pregnant women most at risk.Over the past two decades, the world has made incredible strides in malaria prevention and treatment - halving the malaria death rate and saving over 11.7 million lives.Together we have the knowledge and tools that can accelerate efforts to end malaria and help communities adapt and provide rapid support during climate emergencies. But with every day we wait, the impacts of climate change become stronger and rising threats will make it harder to reach zero malaria. This animation, narrated by the newest Zero Malaria ambassador, young Kenyan climate and health champion Ellyanne Wanjiku Chylstun, shows how the right funding and commitments can save millions of lives – putting us back on the path to ending malaria for good.
